Sleep is typically divided into 4 categories: Awake, Light Sleep, Deep Sleep, and REM Sleep.
Each sleep group plays a vitally important role in maintaining not only your mental wellbeing but also your physical health.
REM Sleep is known as Rapid Eye Movement and sometimes referred to as Stage R. Light Sleep and Deep Sleep can be grouped as Non Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) Sleep or refered to as sleep stages 1 – 4.
The amount of sleep in each phase varies from person to person. An ideal sleep would consist of four or five 90-minute sleep cycles.

Consistency, if possible is the solution for people who work night shifts. Ideally the key is to maintain your normal sleep routine from your work days on your days off. For example, if you usually wake up at 6pm for work and go to sleep at 7am, try to replicate this pattern on your days off.
With families, children, partners, flatmates etc, this can be difficult to achieve. This is why it is crucial that you instil the importance of your sleep patterns to them and that they ensure they understand they should not waken you unless there’s a dire emergency!
The two biggest killers of sleep for night shift workers hands down are NOISE and LIGHT! The best solutions for shift work are earplugs, a white noise machine and a sleep mask!
If you are not on call, it is a great idea to switch off your phone while you sleep.
Light and noise exposure may be other issues for sleeping during the day. Try drawing the shades or sleeping with an eye mask if your bedroom tends to be bright during the day. Earplugs and white noise machines can be effective at blocking outside sounds. Unless you are on call, consider turning your phone off while you sleep.
A hot shower or bath or some form of relaxation or meditation is a great way to help your mind and body get ready for bed.
